No. For 1. I do not care. American and British spelling is now the same. The only difference is the accent and some extra words you guys have I.E. innit or whatever you call it. 2. You using old English does not make you look smart at all.
3. You constantly trying to correct everyone also does not make you look well. At Oxford and Cambridge, they use the American English system. I know this because my older brother was there for study abroad for 1 semester. 4. Trying to prove me wrong on a first-hand account will only make you shoot yourself in the foot (It's a saying, not a literal thing to do). 5. End of speech.
I'm sorry if I angered you, that wasn't my intention. I was just using the spelling I grew up with, but thank you for the history lesson, I'll keep these points in mind. :)
As far as I'm aware, we're all taught (at least the majority of us) "old English" when learning English in the UK. It's not as an attempt to "look smart", it's simply how we were taught. Oxford and Cambridge may use American English (although I'm not sure how much truth that statement holds) but you're basing the whole of the UK on two universities within it lol.
Im not trying to argue; I just dont think it's fair for Gabe to be getting this hate. Feel free to refer to this page for more information on UK & American spelling:
I don't think it's fair to say that the "majority of Brits speak American English". As a Brit myself, I can tell you that I've not had contact with anyone who actively uses American English here. I'll admit that sometimes people do use American spelling due to exposure to American media, but, as I said, British English is what we're taught in schools so that's what most of us use.
